‘Creating The Homework Habit’

  ‘Creating The Homework Habit’

Parents can help children develop good work habits. Please show your child that homework is an important priority and that you value its worth by offering support. Intermediate students should be spending about 30 minutes per school day on “homework”. If they don’t have specific assignments this time should be used for reading fiction and non-fiction books, magazines or newspapers; reviewing Social Studies and Science materials; practicing number facts and mathematical operations; etc.

Primary students are encouraged to participate in classroom Home Reading Programs, practice their number facts, and play educational games regularly.

Top ten tips for successfully monitoring homework:

1. Sit down with your child and schedule a time for completing homework assignments. Homework habits are more easily formed if children work at the same time each day.

2. Help your child to choose an appropriate study location – a quiet corner, a desk, a comfortable chair and provide your child with good lighting and the necessary materials (pencils, paper, a dictionary, etc.).

3. Ask your children to describe the assignment before

beginning, and to later show you the completed work, or

ask them to summarize what they have learned.

4. Encourage your children to work on their own, but say that you are available for help.

5. If your child does need help, look over the material before he/she begins so you are familiar with the assignment.

6. Be a resource and a consultant for your child, but do not hover over him or her with constant advice. Remember that sometimes the best help is a hug, a smile, or a word of approval.

7. If your child becomes frustrated, put the assignment away for a while.

8. Notify the teacher, through a phone call, a note in the student planner or by e-mail, if your child is experiencing any difficulty or frustration with the assigned work.

9. Please be available to check work and check whether the assignment has been completed.

10. In general, be encouraging and supportive. Your positive attitude is contagious.
